Preventive maintenance is important, not only because manufacturers often require proof of maintenance before they'll honor an equipment warranty, but also because it can extend the life of the equipment, while allowing a licensed technician a chance to identify any potential problem areas. By identifying and replacing a part before it actually fails saves you from having any downtime at all. Who doesn't dread having the A/C going out in summer heat! Every A/C company in the valley is backed up at least a couple of days, and when you're hot, who wants to wait a couple of hours, let alone a couple of days!
